Scenes from the City is an online collaboration between writer Vicky Flood and illustrator Ben Lambert exploring a continuous and ever-shifting relationship between written and visual art.

The surreal illustrations are intended to work like the images you see behind your eyes when you read a story – focusing on certain key points of the narrative. In places they are interpretations of characters and events, in others magnifications, and elsewhere they form the basis of plot development.

The original text and illustrations were exhibited this August at Nolias Gallery on Bankside. The exhibition also featured photography by Laura Scott, some of which is also found here on the blog, and a radio recording by Broken Glass Theatre Company.

An online version of the gallery will be up soon, and we are in the process of setting up an online shop so you can order prints of the artwork featured on the site.

Thank you to everyone who came and took part in the exhibition!

REVIEWS

Fringe Report, August 2010

‘The exhibition as a whole has the power to draw the spectator in, forcing them to forget ‘the world beyond the carriage’. The subtle yet effective repetition and links between otherwise unconnected stories consumes the spectator’s attention, leaving them hungry to spot all of the threads.’
